Mel has completed 2 different trainings to work with cancer survivors:
- Cancer and Exercise from Thrive Health Services
- Cancer Survivors and Physical Activity from The American Academy of Health & Fitness
A variety of side effects occur as a consequence of cancer and associated treatments that may negatively affect function, fatigue and quality of life among cancer survivors. Exercise reduces the risk of cancer recurrence and mortality for some cancer survivors, as well as decreases cardiovascular disease risk factors. Emerging observational and clinical data signify the importance of physical activity in patients with cancer and provide increasing evidence that exercise positively impacts major clinical endpoints such as rate of infection, rate of recurrence, and and overall survival.
Research has consistently found exercise to be physically and psychologically beneficial at all stages of the cancer continuum.
