5 Technics to Release Pain at Your Hip and Lower Back
Do you have pain at your hip? Can you feel a pull at your lower back? Since the beginning of the pandemic, are you spending more time seated than usual? If you do, your glutes complex are probably tight! I can hear you saying: “My what?”
Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have received many emails and calls from old and new clients complaining of pain in their hips. I have asked them the same question; what do you do all day? The answers are almost always the same. I am seated more now than before the pandemic started and their exercise and movement levels have dropped. Now, their hips are screaming!
Did you know that your hips are a ball in a socket joints? Just like the shoulders, hip joints can move in all directions; forward and backwards, side to side and in circle. When someone walks, it is a forward movement. I have seldom seen someone walking backwards or sideways and you know what, you should! During exercise periods, I walk sideways, and I jog backwards because I know that these activities are excellent movements for my hips. If you walk or jog daily, these additions to your exercise can help release the hip joint muscles.
When clients come to me with hip and lower back pain, I suggest exercises that release the tight muscles at the joint. I use foam rollers and different therapy balls. Then, I give them stretches to do and a series of exercises to strengthen the area. Usually, the pain is related to an imbalance between muscles. Once the tension in the muscles is released and the area is strengthened and toned, the pain is reduced, or it completely disappears. However, if you have bursitis, tendinitis or arthritis, I will need to use different technics.
Pain at the hip can also be caused by tension under our feet and by the way you walk. I will need to evaluate your walking gait and examine your feet. If the arch of your foot has collapsed, your knees will turn inward, your pelvis will tilt forward, and this creates an imbalance, which extends all the way up to the base of your neck! I can prescribe different exercises and stretches to help correct these problems.
Often, clients will ask me, “How long will it take to not feel the pain anymore”. That is a question I cannot answer. YOU must answer that question. First, if you believe you can be pain free, then there is more of a chance that it will work. Second, you will have to be committed to the exercise and stretching program. Most programs only involve 10-15 minutes of your time, twice a day. If you are not willing to commit to these prerequisites, please do not waste your time and money.
