Imported foods are picked early to allow for shipping. They ripen without the benefit of plant nutrients. As a result they  usually content only half of the nutrients when compared to locally ripened fruits and produce. Apples for example are ripped in a controlled atmosphere storage space to guarantee their availability all year long.
